Workshops and Other Resources
In addition to one-on-one services, the Career Development Center offers workshops which are open to CDC clients and the general public. We also operate a walk-in resource center staffed by an experienced and trained resource specialist with extensive knowledge of career and job search resources.
Effective January 1, 2012, there will be a $20 charge per workshop for those not enrolled in CDC programs which include workshop participation (e.g., City, County, Maturity Works, Work-Able or Shalom programs).
Payments may be made at CDC reception prior to entering workshop with exact cash, check or MasterCard/VISA -- or in advance by calling your credit card information into Dorcas at 412.586.3732. When you purchase a package of five workshops in advance, a sixth workshop is added at no cost.
How We Help
- Workshops on resume writing, cover letters, interviewing, using the internet to "surf your way" to employment, utilizing interim staffing firms and more provide valuable guidance. Click here for the monthly calendar. Also, as a courtesy to our staff and other clients, please be sure to read our workshop cancellation policy. Also, as to not disturb workshop participants, it is our policy to not allow anyone to join the workshop 10 minutes after it has started. To ensure your attendance and for the benefit of all of our clients, please arrive promptly.
- On site computers allow you to access job sites and other online job seeker resources, apply for jobs and prepare resumes, cover letters and more.
- Our library of career-related books are available to help you learn more about developing resumes, interviewing, job search strategies and more.
- Our job seeker support group, facilitated jointly by the Career Development Center and sister organization Squirrel Hill Psychological Services, provides a professionally-facilitated, confidential forum for job seekers who are experiencing emotional turmoil.
- One of the best sources of jobs is other job seekers. You're all on the front-line, looking for jobs, and as a group know quite a lot about where the job openings are. In addition to being an excellent source of leads and camaraderie (and a great place to practice your "elevator speech" and other presentation tools), CDC's Networking Club is facilitated by a CDC career counselor who can also provide guidance.
- Job fairs arranged by CDC's employment specialists get your resume moved to the top of the pile. CDC holds several job fairs a year on behalf of area employers where CDC counselors do preliminary screening of candidates for specific open positions. If you are a good fit for one of the employers' positions, you will have brief interviews with an employer representative on-site at CDC to determine if they would like to move you to the next step for further consideration.
