Spousal Relocation

Moving to a new city can be stressful enough, and trying to find a job in a town where you don't have many contacts can compound the anxiety. When one spouse relocates for a new position, often the other needs help finding a job as well. Offering job search assistance to that spouse can go far in establishing a rapport with a new employee and demonstrating concern for that employee's family.

How We Help

• We provide a comprehensive array of job search resources, ranging from a job bank to workshops to resume and cover letter development services.
• Clients can access our services remotely, allowing a spouse to begin his or her job search before the big move.
• When a spouse has secured a job or even gets good leads, it can reduce a new employee's anxiety about the family's financial stability.
• Offering to help a spouse find employment is a goodwill gesture that will pay dividends for years to come in the employee-employer relationship.

Meet the People We Help

• A local university hired Ian to chair its English department, and he was planning to move to Pittsburgh from Colorado with his wife, Samantha, and their two daughters. Samantha was a high-profile immigration attorney in Colorado, and she wanted to continue to work in the field after the relocation. The university hired the Career Development Center to help Samantha find a new position.

• Jayne recently joined a large real estate development firm as its Vice President of Marketing. She previously held a similar position at an organization in Cleveland. Her husband, Simon, has been looking for work in finance but has had no luck so far, even though he has a few contacts in Pittsburgh. Jayne’s firm has offered to retain the Career Development Center’s services to help Simon with his job search.
